What is Amitabha?
In Buddhism, there are many Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, such as Shakyamuni Buddha, Maitreya Buddha, Medicine Buddha, Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin) Bodhisattva, Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva, and Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva. Each of these figures has different vows and missions of compassion, which is why they are known by different names. Amitabha is one of these Buddhas.
Amitabha is the Buddha of the Western Pure Land, also known as the Buddha of Infinite Light and the Buddha of Infinite Life. From the title "Buddha of Infinite Life," we can understand that Amitabha is connected to longevity and eternal life. His name, "Amitabha," marks him as one of the most revered Buddhas. In the Western Pure Land, Amitabha is accompanied by two Bodhisattvas: Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin) and Mahasthamaprapta. Together, these three figures guide and teach followers, helping to answer spiritual questions and guide all beings toward salvation.
When Amitabha established the Western Pure Land, he envisioned a world of peace and purity, free from conflict, deceit, and all forms of earthly sin. This land was to be a reflection of inner sincerity and tranquility.
The Spread of Buddhism:
Buddhism originated in India and spread across three main routes:
- Theravāda Buddhism: Spread through Southeast Asia, including countries like Thailand and Myanmar.
- Tibetan Buddhism: Reached Tibet and the Himalayan regions.
- Chinese Mahayana Buddhism: Spread across most of China and is the form of Buddhism commonly encountered today.
Chinese Buddhism further branched into eight schools: Tiantai, Yogācāra (established by the renowned monk Xuanzang during the Tang Dynasty in the 7th century), Sanlun, Huayan, Chan (Zen), Pure Land, Vinaya, and Esoteric Buddhism. Of these, Chan and Pure Land are the two most influential schools.
Amitabha is central to the Pure Land school. The term "Pure Land" refers to the Western Paradise that Amitabha vowed to create, a land free from suffering.
Amitabha’s 48 Great Vows:
According to the Infinite Life Sutra (《无量寿经》), Amitabha was once a king who, after hearing the teachings of Buddha Lokesvararaja, renounced his throne and became a monk named Dharmakara. In the presence of this Buddha, Dharmakara made 48 great vows, the most notable of which was his pledge to create the Western Pure Land, a paradise of boundless joy and serenity.
What is the Western Pure Land?

The air is filled with the fragrance of mandala flowers, celestial music drifts through the atmosphere, and rare, exquisite creatures roam freely. There is no suffering, only eternal spring and serenity.

The Deeper Meaning of Chanting Amitabha’s Name:
While chanting Amitabha’s name brings many benefits, it is important to remember that, according to Buddhist teachings, these are only provisional methods. The Infinite Life Sutra states: "One cannot be born into the Pure Land with little merit, virtue, or karmic connections." This means that simply chanting the name of Amitabha for personal gain without cultivating good deeds is not enough to reach the Pure Land.
Buddhist scriptures explain: "If any man or woman hears the name of Amitabha and holds onto it, whether for one day, two days, up to seven days, with a focused and unwavering mind, they will be born into the Pure Land." The key here is the phrase "focused and unwavering mind." This shows that true benefit comes from sincere, wholehearted chanting, not from merely saying the words without understanding.
Achieving one-minded concentration, where every thought is of Amitabha, is the path to true salvation. As the scriptures state: "When the time of death comes, Amitabha, along with a multitude of sacred beings, will appear to guide the practitioner to the Pure Land." However, this requires more than casual chanting—it demands inner dedication and a clear mind.
To truly benefit from reciting Amitabha’s name, one must not only chant but also cultivate good deeds, focus on virtuous actions, and maintain a pure heart. Reciting his name must be a part of daily life, not just a last-minute effort at the end of one’s life. Only then can one truly realize the wish to escape suffering and attain the peace of the Pure Land.
